What is Dry Ice Blasting?

Dry ice blasting is a relatively new and revolutionary method of industrial cleaning. It is eco-friendly, nonabrasive, nonflammable, and non-conductive. Dry ice blasting is an efficient and cost-effective method to clean or prepare a surface for restoration. Its versatility allows for many different applications, from dusting a smoke-damaged antique book to cleaning large industrial equipment, such as in automotive and aerospace manufacturing plants. Dry ice blasting is an FDA, EPA, and USDA-approved cleaning medium.

There are many advantages to using dry ice blasting over traditional blasting media. Unlike sandblasting or plastic bead blasting, which uses hard abrasive media to grind a surface, sometimes damaging or distorting it, dry ice blasting uses soft dry ice to impact a surface. Traditional cleaning methods leave secondary contaminants such as harsh chemicals from solvents or grit media from sandblasting and soda blasting. Dry ice blasting simply lifts the undesirable material from the surface, reducing or eliminating the need to dispose of toxic “secondary waste”.

  • Dry ice blasting is a process through which dry ice is fed into a machine then accelerated by pressurized air to supersonic speed, creating mini explosions at the surface of a substrate. A micro thermo-kinetic shock forms from the impact between the extreme temperature of the dry ice, at -109°F and the heat absorbed from the top layer of the surface coating. This rapid transfer of heat instantaneously sublimates ( change from solid back to gas ) the dry ice. As the gas expands to 800 times the volume of dry ice, it causes micro cracks of the surface coating. These cracks break the bond between contaminant and the surface coating, ultimately leading to final separation. The process lifts undesirable substances such as, oil, paint, adhesives, contaminants, and other production residues. The gas then vaporizes ( sublimates ) into the air. No residual or secondary toxic waste is left behind. The dirt or contaminants can simply be swept away.

    • Available in various models to suit your cleaning requirements.

    • Nozzles and accessories come in wide selection of shapes and sizes to accommodate your cleaning needs.

    • Blasting machines are available for rent or purchase.

    • Rentals are on a daily, weekly or yearly basis.

  • Environmentally Sustainable Non-Destructive Cleaning

Whether you need a dry clean, are trying to reduce the amount of water or chemicals used or are trying to enhance sanitation or cross-contamination prevention programs, dry ice blasting provides the environmentally sustainable answer.

Dry Ice Blasting is Clean and Safe

Dry ice is an approved medium by the EPA, USDA & FDA, and is non-toxic, non-hazardous and inhibits mold & bacteria growth

Dry ice blasting has been effectively used in EPA, USDA, FDA, AIB and GFSI inspected/certified facilities

Dry ice blasting is safe to use with food processing equipment

Dry ice blasting does not release harmful gases into the atmosphere

Dry ice blasting does not generate secondary waste

Dry ice blasting reduces or eliminates employee exposure to ( and corporate liability from ) the use of dangerous chemical cleaning agents

Other cleaning methods can be toxic

Sand, soda, or water blasting can leave toxic secondary waste to be cleaned up in addition to the toxic substrate

Sand, soda, or water blasting can create downstream contamination that effects surrounding installations

Soda blasting can kill surrounding vegetation

Chemical and solvent cleaning methods are toxic, which creates toxic waste to be disposed of

Workers are exposed to potentially harmful substances through the use of chemicals and solvents

    Completely Environmentally Responsible

In addition to being clean and safe, it is also important to remember that dry ice is obtained as a byproduct of other industrial processes – i.e. it is made from reclaimed CO2. It does not produce CO2 or add CO2 to the atmosphere and therefore does not contribute to the greenhouse effect.

Dry ice blasting is truly, and completely, environmentally friendly!
